Whether you're a beginner or an advanced amateur who's looking to reach the next level in outdoor photography, this course is for those serious about their photography and want to learn at their own pace in a guided, natural setting. Your learning goals are thoroughly discussed before your workshop begins through email exchange and phone calls and a date, location and an agenda are agreed to. Everything packed in is ALWAYS packed out. Suggested gear will be thoroughly discussed before each workshop in order to maximize your safety, comfort and success.
Limitless Locations
Since I am based in Central Maryland, you can choose countless outstanding locations from Western Maryland to the Eastern Shore. Locations in Virginia, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia and Northern Maine (both Summer and Winter) are also available. Your personal interests are paramount. Locations are discussed and finalized by evaluating the current season, the prevailing lighting and weather conditions or by your request. I have been working and photographing these areas for many years and will happily share with you my experience from past shoots. Opportunities for both land-based and on-water workshops (canoe, kayak and boat) are available depending on your photography goals and time preferences.
Workshop Content Customized for You
During our time in the field, you will receive both instruction and time to work on your photography techniques. Based on your preliminary input, areas of individual focus can include how to:
- gain a solid technical foundation in outdoor photography
- read lighting and weather conditions
- plan location and positioning for optimal opportunities
- learn composition
- understand camera settings for different scenarios
- utilize the right lens
- apply filters
- how to shoot panoramas and long exposures
- use a tripod, timers and lens hoods
- look for abstract images and realistic images in natural surroundings
- photograph animals in their natural habitats

Physical Considerations 
My workshops require a fair amount of walking/hiking depending on the location. You should be comfortable walking several miles and carrying your camera equipment, and a water bottle, in a comfortable camera bag or backpack. We will be shooting along country roads, woodland trails, beaches and other outdoor locations. Whether on land or water, caution is always prudent, and your safety is foremost on my mind. Wearing a good pair of hiking shoes/boots and having a modest level of fitness and health will greatly facilitate your experience in the outdoors.
Dry bags for camera equipment can be provided on water workshops and a provided life preserver is required to be worn when boating or canoeing. Customers are welcome to use their own canoe or kayak as long as proficiency on the water and in their watercraft is demonstrated. Sun conditions, even during early and late in the day times can be harmful to your skin and the use of your own sunscreen is highly recommended. Insect repellent is also strongly recommended to have in your kit.
To take full advantage of best potential light situations, we will start at, or before, dawn and finish after sunset (half days take advantage of either end of the day that is booked). I look forward to meeting and working with you in the great outdoors!
